Why Our Competitors Buy Our Best Genetics
Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde said “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” and he’s right.
When competitors buy our genetics it means we have something they and their farming clients want. They want more performance. They want better returns from their progeny purchase. And they want to know what they buy has the breeding values to back it up. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t do it.
We see this as a compliment to the quality of our animals and the commitment we’ve continually made in our breeding programme. They are using the best genetics they can access to raise the genetic gain and potential of their animals, just like you would.
It also means our genetics are getting into more farmer’s hands and into more farms across the country. This is good for industry and good for everyone. It’s a true win:win.
Jameson, a son of Melior’s sire Mortlach that is performing very well – raw data measures for growth and EMA are the highest numbers ever recorded for these traits (within his given stud herd) in European red deer.
John F Kennedy said “A rising tide floats all boats” which is another truism. By that, he meant that any improvement benefits all participants. When genetic gain can be accelerated by access to higher and better breeding values, the whole sector benefits.
Your success is our success.
Our focus continues to be making sure New Zealand farmers can get access to the best deer genetics that deliver the fastest growth and returns for them and their families. Now more than ever, quality animals based on proven breeding values reduce risk and make the best of challenging market and climatic conditions.
Continual improvement is what we are all about and we will continue to welcome competitor studs buying our genetics. Whilst some might say no, it lays a challenge to us to keep doing what we do best and what we have as our mantra at Melior: Better your Best.
If you want to keep ahead, and join them and us, drop me an email at tom@melior.nz or call me on 027 600 8555 and have a conversation on how we can improve the performance and profitability of your deer. I look forward to talking with you.
